Roman mosaic floors were made from thousands of individual tesserae — each fragment cut by hand and set into mortar, the joins between them part of the surface rather than evidence of its construction. Over centuries, some of those floors cracked and shifted, the fragments separating slightly and the composition becoming something more interesting than the original design. This Monaco Edition rug was hand-knotted in wool and silk with that quality of the aged mosaic in mind: warm stone, sage and ivory fragments sitting beside one another across the surface, the silk threads giving the pale palette a depth that keeps it from reading as simply neutral. Available in custom sizes.
