The figurative textile artists of the early 20th century — Anni Albers at the Bauhaus, Sonia Delaunay in Paris — understood that a human form rendered in woven thread acquires a texture and materiality that paint on canvas never has, the body of the figure becoming literally part of the surface it is made from. This Monaco Edition wool rug draws from that tradition: an abstracted figure in warm coral, taupe and ivory built from a surface of fine woven texture, the composition sitting at the boundary between portraiture and pure textile art.
