The medallion format — a single radiating form at the centre of the field, the composition organised around one point of perfect symmetry — has been the defining structure of luxury rug design from the Persian workshops of the 16th century to the present day, because it works: it gives a large surface a clarity and authority that no other composition achieves as consistently.
