Illuminated manuscripts from medieval Persia used gold leaf as both pigment and surface — the gold applied not as decoration but as the ground from which everything else was read, its warmth giving the painted colours above it a depth that no painted ground could match. Monaco Edition hand-knotted this silk rug with that warm gold ground as its starting point: a field of warm amber and pale gold in fine mosaic-like surface variation, the pure silk pile carrying the colour with a natural luminosity that shifts through the day.
