Medulum

Medulum: Venice, Wood, and Forty Years of Craft Turned Into Furniture

The name comes from Latin — the watercourse that Venetian nobility followed by boat to reach their summer residences on the mainland. It is a precise choice for a brand rooted in that same geography: Medulum was founded in 2017 in Meolo, a town in the Venetian hinterland, by Diego Zanchettin — an interior designer who built the company directly onto four decades of his family's carpentry workshop. The craft infrastructure was already there; what Medulum added was a design programme with its own clear point of view.

That programme runs through a series of external collaborations. Medulum works with Italian architects and designers — among them Serena Confalonieri, Accardi Buccheri, Cara\Davide, Debonademeo, and Viviana Degrandi — commissioning pieces that push the workshop's woodworking tradition into new formal territory. The results are pieces that look like they came out of a design office and a joinery at the same time, which is precisely what they did.

The Collections

Each Medulum collection is anchored to a specific reference — architectural, geological, or cultural — and the connection holds through material selection and construction, not just naming:

• Basalto — sideboards and storage units in solid ash stained black or deep green, with geometrically worked doors that replicate the pillar-like formations of cooled lava. Interiors in satin brass or lacquered lime wood; satin brass top. A piece that reads as geological before it reads as furniture.
• Prospecto — cabinetry in Canaletto walnut veneer with inlaid satin brass lines that create a three-dimensional grid across the surface, drawn from Filippo Brunelleschi's perspective drawings. The illusion is geometric and slightly disorienting at the right angle.
• Cheba — coffee tables and bookcases structured around the open lattice geometry of bird cages. Light and precise in form, in contrast to the heavier material presence of Basalto.
• Milla — a sideboard series in walnut, lacquered, or oak veneered wood, distinguished by doors covered in woven grosgrain fabric that creates a tactile, geometric surface. Legs and detailing in satin brass.
• Arcate — a chest of drawers whose seven drawer fronts are milled from shaped solid wood, each following the curve of an arch. The architectural reference is direct; the result is a piece that sits between furniture and bas-relief.
• Tapparella — a tall sideboard in birch plywood with solid lime doors cut in alternating vertical lines. Heavy in volume, light in graphic quality.
• Gengè — a mirror designed so that a viewer can only see their own reflection by finding the precise right angle. From outside that angle, the surface reads as a mask. A conceptually rigorous piece in a collection that rarely makes pieces without an idea inside them.

Materials and Craft

Across the range, Medulum works primarily in solid wood and veneer — ash, oak, Canaletto walnut, national walnut, lime wood — finished with aniline stains, transparent lacquer, or pigmented paint depending on the collection. Satin brass appears throughout as hardware, legs, inserts, and tops. Grosgrain fabric, extra-clear tempered glass, and mirrored steel surfaces feature in specific pieces where the design requires a material shift. Everything is produced in Meolo, by the same team that has been working wood in that workshop for four decades.
